Rockstart launches 3rd Smart Energy Accelerator Program

The search is on for 10 of the world’s brightest startups to build the “internet of energy things”

AMSTERDAM – 20 October 2015 – Rockstart, the Global Startup Machine, today announced their 2016 Smart Energy Accelerator is taking applications. The program, driven by Freerk Bisschop, a seasoned venture developer in sustainable energy and cleantech, will incorporate an extensive network of over 75 smart energy mentors, investors and energy partners to lead 10 startups with the goal of making a sustainable impact on global energy systems.

Bisschop says, “We’re looking for energy startups who are employing web, mobile and data technology in what we’re calling the ‘internet of energy things.’ The energy sector is ripe for disruption and I’d like to be at the forefront of that change. I’m convinced that internet technology startups are key to accelerating the world’s transition to a sustainable energy supply for everyone. Deploying machine connectivity, developing software and apps, aggregating intelligent data and sharing information and assets will optimize energy installations, grids and devices. Our location in the heart of Amsterdam is key too. Participating startups will have access to the metropolitan area as an urban lab, with the ability to test ideas within the Smart City ecosystem including the recently launched The Things Network.”

From day one, the program will steer startups towards growth, making sure they engage directly with relevant suppliers, users, professionals and other stakeholders in energy. Smart Energy program partners Alliander and Cofely allow startups to engage with energy clients, user data, corporate innovation programs and developers. The program is further enhanced by a 75+ mentor network whose expertise encompasses nearly all areas of the energy business – from corporate to startup, tech to financial, grid to lightbulb.

Oscar Kneppers, Rockstart founder and CEO, comments, “Rockstart has always been invested in Smart Energy. Today the team powers the PostCode Lottery Green Challenge Deep Dive for its partner the Doen Foundation, a leading global impact fund. I think our dedication to the Smart Energy mission combined with Freerk’s experience and network of partnerships will elevate Rockstart’s Smart Energy program to new levels.”

The 180-day program begins in February 2016 and takes place at Rockstart’s HQ in Amsterdam. 10 selected startups will receive a cash investment of €20.000 plus an in-kind investment, to include office space, expert workshops, international events and intensive hands-on mentor and partner support culminating in a June 2016 Demo Day.

2016 Smart Energy partners include Alliander, Cofely, Accenture, the City of Amsterdam, Stichting DOEN, Bird & Bird and Elevate Consulting Group.

Applications are now open until Dec 12th and can be submitted here. Learn more about Rockstart’s Smart Energy Accelerator.
