Rockstart Biochar Network launches in Denmark

The impact VC marks the start of its new initiative, the Biochar Network, supported by the Green Development and Demonstration Program.

Copenhagen — April 3, 2025 — Rockstart, the impact venture capital firm, launches the Rockstart Biochar Network, an initiative that aims to transform the Danish biochar ecosystem by bringing together startups, industry leaders, investors and research experts to boost innovation in regenerative agriculture.

Rockstart is developing the network with support from the Danish government as one of the recipients of a grant by the Green Development and Demonstration Program (Grønt Udviklings- & Demonstrationsprogram, GUDP). Totaling DKK 169.5 million over the next two years, the grant aims to partially finance 24 cutting-edge projects in the field of sustainable agriculture in Denmark.

At Rockstart, we believe that building world-class ecosystems requires strong collaboration and knowledge-sharing among partners. With our decade-long experience in impact investing and supporting over 60 agrifood tech startups, we know that transformative change happens when we bring together entrepreneurs, researchers, investors, and industry leaders. That’s why we’re excited to launch the Rockstart Biochar Network with the support of GUDP to accelerate Denmark’s and Europe’s transition to regenerative agriculture and create lasting environmental impact. Why biochar?

Biochar is a carbon-rich form of charcoal that is produced by heating organic materials — such as wood chips, crop residues, or manure — in a controlled, oxygen-limited environment, a process known as pyrolysis. This method prevents the material from fully combusting, resulting in a stable form of carbon that can persist in soils for centuries.

Biochar is scientifically proven to improve the health and vitality of trees, crops and grass. Biochar presents a long-term, sustainable solution for soil enrichment and carbon sequestration. With a lifespan of thousands of years, it requires only a single application, offering a peat-free and environmentally beneficial alternative. Notably, each tonne of biochar applied to the soil effectively separates the equivalent of three tonnes of carbon dioxide, making it a significant tool in mitigating climate change.

Goals of the network

The Rockstart Biochar Network is dedicated to advancing the understanding and application of biochar while fostering collaboration across the Danish biochar ecosystem. Open to all stakeholders – including startups, investors, corporations, research institutions, policymakers, NGOs, and other relevant parties – the network serves as a hub for knowledge-sharing and innovation in the industry. Participation in the Biochar Network is completely free, ensuring accessibility for all who wish to engage.

As part of the Rockstart Biochar Network’s mission, the project supports the climate adaptation of Danish food production by developing strategies and technologies that help agriculture withstand rising temperatures, prolonged droughts, and the increasing risk of heavy rainfall. Additionally, the initiative aims to promote enhancing the fertility of Denmark’s coarse sandy soils through the use of biochar, which enhances water and nutrient retention.

Furthermore, the Rockstart Biochar Network aligns with Denmark’s biochar objectives, ensuring that agriculture and other key sectors are prepared for the technology transition required by the government’s 2027 plans. This includes adapting to CO₂ taxation policies, integrating climate technologies, and expanding the use of biochar. Additionally, the project contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by promoting knowledge-sharing and advancing technologies for effective biochar storage. With the Danish biochar market expected to reach approximately $5.7 million by 2030, growing at a CAGR of 14.8% from 2023 to 2030, the project plays a vital role in driving sustainable growth within the sector.

What to expect in 2025

As the main driving force behind the project, Rockstart will use its international experience with startups in the agricultural sector and knowledge of technology investments to mobilize key players across the biochar value chain during two events in Copenhagen in 2025.

The network kick-off event will take place on the 27th of May, bringing the community together in person for the first time. The event aims to provide a platform for discussion and networking to identify the ecosystem’s challenges and opportunities, highlighting the network’s importance in advancing Denmark’s biochar transformation.

Later in the year, on the 25th of November, Rockstart will host its Forward event to create the biochar sector's leading gathering place. The event will also put the spotlight on some of the brightest minds in the industry, as five carefully selected startups will get an opportunity to pitch to the audience.
